Days 27- 29 Sailing and Pago Pago, American Samoa

2014-02-01_065048_6000 CollageTwo days of sailing and we finally arrived in American Samoa – Pago Pago. We docked in Pago Pago Harbor which is about 5 miles from the airport and visitors center. Upon exiting the ship we had to walk through a market to get out of the port area. I decided to get to an ATM machine for some American cash and purchase and mail more postcards. The US post office was opened till noon this Saturday just for our visit. Everyone off the ship was mailing back packages and of course the lines were outside the post office.  I decided there must be another place to buy stamps. I was told to got to Sadie’s by the Sea – about a 10 minute walk. I found the hotel bought the stamps and had a coffee at the Goat Island Cafe – a recommended spot to visit for the views. After writing an stamping the cards, i went back to the post office to post them. I then got on a “tour bus” for a tour of the western part of the island. We stopped to see the Flower Pot island and then the oldest cathedral on Pago Pago. The graves here are the same as on the Polynesian Island. The families bury their dead on the property to ensure future rights to the property. We drove by the gulf course – they proud they have one.  We passed a beach called the slippery rock beach where one slides into the sea on  slippery rocks!  Then on the way back we could have stopped at Sadie’s by the Sea for those who wanted to sun bath. I decided to go back to the port. I got off at the entrance to the Port and went for a walk to the East. I had decided to visit the US National Park in Samoa. I decided to stop off at Sadie’s Inn – by the same owners as Sadie’s by the Sea for a cool one. It was humid and 85 degrees outside.  My downfall for the rest of the day.  i ran into the wine expert from the ship who was imbibing also.  A few beers, specialty drinks and margaritas and numerous games of pool later,we bounced our way back to the ship at 4 PM.  I somehow stopped along the way to purchase a ball cap. I was pretty slow the rest of the evening and decided I did not need wine with dinner.
